Students tackle “The Dish”

Students across Australia will be building their own radio telescope dishes in 2009 as part of the University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge.

The Challenge is an outreach program designed to encourage junior students to study science in senior high school.

Up to 260 students a day engage in fun group activities related to science, technology and engineering.

The 2009 program will be rolled out across the country from February and will run for the whole year.

The special Challenge activity devised for IYA is “The Dish”, in which students will have half a day to build a working radio “dish” to detect, locate and decipher signals “that may indicate the presence of an alien civilisation”.
